Functional Crown Lengthening

If you have a situation where the tooth has fractured at or below the gum line or you have decay at or below the gumline, there is not enough space for the gum fibers to attach to the root. The fibers will not attach to the crown or restoration. In that situation, the tissue must be removed. If there is not 3 millimeters of space from the fracture to the margin of the bone then the tissue must be reflected back and some bone removed to establish a 3 millimeter biologic width.
